To make the outside log cabin border fit and to keep the symmetry of its design, I had to add 6" to the width on each side. I would have preferred adding three rows of 2" squares, or some lovely complex blocks. But time is going quickly, and I went the simple, chunky route. (Nothing to impress quilters, but hopefully the future owner of the quilt won't mind my simple enlargement.)
I framed the center with 6" squares, then the final border of 6" log cabin blocks. The blocks are pretty accurate and fit together nicely.

I took baby steps out to our mailbox this afternoon on our slippery, ice-covered driveway. We're dealing with a major ice storm that covered much of Iowa on Sunday. I have a future project planned, but I need 3/4 to 1-yard pieces of big, bold, Westminster style reds/oranges. So, I checked with From Here to Quilternity and I found reduced prices for some lovely Kaffe fabrics. Today the mailman delivered the fabric. This future project just may be too pretty to give away. But I've said that before.

I love how you made the quilt bigger Vivian...the log cabin border adds a lovely finishing touch.
Enjoy your new project..

Nothing wrong with the six inch square inner border. There is a lot of activity in this lovely quilt and that border just provides a nice break in the activity. It holds everything together beautifully.
Hope DH is able to come home soon!
Love how you made it larger. Best wishes for your dear DH.
I really like the border you made for this quilt it works!

I think the "Chunky" bits work just great since they are between the size of the log cabins and the star blocks.
Your DH has seen far too much of the hospital these last couple of years. Hope he is finished with surgeries for a good long while!
So sorry to hear about hubby - glad he's on the mend. Your quilt turned out great. Are you going to quilt it??
Vivian, I think your quilt is wonderful. I have been gazing at pictures of quilts all day, with the idea that I was collecting inspiration for my 2013 goals. This is as pretty as any I saw anywhere!
I think your quilt top turned out very well! I like everything about it really!!!! Glad to hear your DH is on the mend!
Your quilt is stunning! Love your fabric choices and your "chunky" route works really well for this quilt. The owner will adore it! So sorry to hear about DH's struggles...hopefully he will be on the mend now. Take care...
Oh your poor husband, and you too. How scarey. I'm glad hes doing better and hopefully home soon.
The borders look great Hooray for Log Cabin Blocks!!
Love your homesteaders daughter quilt! So pretty and the borders are perfect! Also love the bright but traditional looking Kaffes. I love his fabrics in those rich reds and browns and blacks. Your project will be a beauty I am sure! Glad to hear your DH is on the mend now. It's so stressful when our loved ones don't perk up after surgery as expected! I hope he improves fast now...take care.
I love your Homesteader's Daughter quilt! There is not a thing wrong with the 6" border that you added - it looks wonderful. Hope your hubby is doing better. And stay off of that ice!!!
I, too, really like the look of the 6" squares and the log cabins. I would never have thought of that, but I'm going to keep the log cabin idea in my brain. Best wishes to your husband. Hope he's home soon and feeling good. And like the sarge used to say on Hill Street Blues...be careful out there!!
I love what you have done with this quilt to make it larger....It looks great. Hope DH is back home soon.....those supplies for a future project look interesting!
Great quilt Vivian and you stamped your own style on it and it works well. Loving the brights and can't wait to see what they will become. Wishing you all well.
